"Terraced Time" is inspired by the Taoyuan water and agricultural landscape, transforming the logic of terraced fields into the flow of light across mirrored panels. As travelers pass by, over 700 panels sequentially reflect ambient light, creating a stream of light that changes with the flow of people. The color scheme was chosen by local community voting from four options: farmland, ponds, channels, and terraced gradients. A secondary artwork on the platform level skybridge was co-created with the community.
With Taoyuan's shift toward industrialization and urbanization, traditional agricultural landscapes in Caolin and its surroundings are being dismantled and restructured. Projects like the Taoyuan Aerotropolis have irreversibly changed the region, converting farmland into concrete and fragmenting irrigation channels. Caolin is at the intersection of agricultural deconstruction and urban expansion, rapidly being integrated into high-density urban areas along the MRT line. The loss of landscape is not just spatial but also a deep dissolution of historical, cultural, and daily life patterns.
The Taoyuan MRT Green Line, the city's first independently built line, connects four administrative districts and reshapes the urban backbone. For Caolin, the opening of G15a Station marks its integration into the metropolitan core. The arrival of the MRT cannot bring back the terraced fields, but it can preserve their logic in a new form. The "Terraced Time" public art installation serves as a cultural anchor, connecting newcomers and long-term residents to both past and future.
